The Eastern Sierra and Northern San Gabriel Wild Heritage Act contained several compromise provisions for OHV and snowmobilers, including a new trail giving snowmobilers access from Highway 108 to the newly created Bridgeport Winger Recreation Area (near Sonora Pass).

Well, as seems to be our luck, biologists discovered a small population of the rare Sierra Nevada Red Fox near Sonora Pass. The Red Fox was thought to be found only in Northern California, and now the USFS is being pushed to deny snowmobilers the route.

Among the options forest officials are considering is to route the snowmobiles away from the sensitive area, or require monitoring that could shut down snowmobile access if too many enthusiasts trespass into the nearby Emigrant Wilderness or if too many Sierra Nevada red fox winter dens are disturbed.

The option preferred by the forest service, however, calls for the path to cross the Pacific Crest Trail in two places and does not call for so-called "adaptive management" monitoring that could lead to restrictions on snowmobilers.

Public comments on the plan are due by April 11 and can be sent to Bridgeport District Ranger, Attn: PCT Crossing, HC 62 Box 1000, Bridgeport, CA, 93517, or e-mailed to comments-intermtn-humboldt-toiyabe-bridgeport@fs.fed.us.

Clearly, future "place based" legislation must contain provisions should key concessions made to OHVers, mountain bikers and snowmobilers be threatened in a similar fashion.
